What is EMBOSS?
EMBOSS is a package of high-quality FREE Open Source software for sequence analysis. It contains a wide range of tools, suited for protein and nucleic acid analysis.

EMBOSS on SGI Origin (zisgi):
To set the necessary environment variables for EMBOSS just start the EMBOSS environment by typing emboss at the system prompt: |

watson@zisgi 1 % emboss |

" watson@zisgi 1 %" is the zisgi system prompt (assuming you discovered the DNA double-helix).
Invoking EMBOSS changes the system prompt to: watson@EMBOSS 2 %
To get an overview of the available EMBOSS programs use: |

watson@EMBOSS 2 % wossname |
|
To see which databases are configured to be used with EMBOSS type: |
| |
watson@EMBOSS 3 % showdb |
|
To leave EMBOSS just type: |
| |
watson@EMBOSS 4 % exitemboss |
|
and you will see the initial system prompt:
watson@zisgi 5 %
